EDGE OF ANARCHY- The Sawmill

What we learned during "Skeener's Townhouse":

Aerodus- Likes to play dress-up.
Baelgren- Every so often he buys a goat that is never seen nor heard from again...
Lucien- Does not like the smell of rotting meat, is able to charm the pants off big stinky monsters, and is not very good at deciphering Nidalese (Shadowtongue).
Lugo- Meeting Laori did little to convince him that the 'Shadow Pact' is a good idea.

In this episode, our heroes spent a lot of time figuring out what to do next. They contemplated returning to the sewers, but no one was excited about a second meeting with Lucien's pet monster (especially Lucien). They finally read the taxation document found at the scene of the murder (see EDGE OF ANARCHY- The Shadow Pact), only to realize that the one date left on the taxation document had recently come and gone. They spent some time trying to find Laori in a request for help, and were surprised to find that she is the owner of a respected medical practice in the Midland District. They learned that 'Father Skinsaw' is another name for one of Korvosa's lesser known and more feared deities; Norborger. Finally, the party concentrated their energies on finding the place in Skeener's notes called 'The Sawmill'. After some investigation, they found a lumber yard named the Seven's Sawmill:

Shortly after dusk, witnessing half a dozen employees exiting the mill, the characters make their move. First they gain entry into the undermill, where they discover large water wheels that provide power to the building's machinery through a series of belts, gears, pulleys, and ropes. With no apparent access to the upper levels, the party is forced to gain entry by picking the locks to the front doors. Another dark room awaits them, apparently a loading bay with stairs leading up. Climbing the stairs, they hear footsteps from the floor above. Trying to get into better positions only reveals their presence to a mill inhabitant who, after realizing he is outnumbered, quickly retreats. The PCs press on despite having lost the element of surprise. It is not long before they encounter opposition; a trio of masked humanoids wielding wicked-looking razor knives. Aerodus takes advantage of the cramped fighting quarters by throwing one of his explosive concoctions, knocking two of the assailants prone and forcing the third to run away. At this point they hear a hoarse, scratchy voice addressing them from above, "What do you want?" The ensuing conversation confirms they have found the man they have been looking for; Skeener. He invites the intruders to reveal themselves, which they do, and finally they are able to put a face to the name (a disfigured face, but a face nonetheless). The following negotiations fall short, forcing a heated battle in which four cultists are subdued, Skeener escapes, a prisoner is murdered, and Lucien & Lugo are rendered unconscious through an accumulation of physical damage. Aerodus and Baelgren load their immobile companions onto their donkey rental, find the nearest inn, and decide to lay low...

  1. -Aerodus and Baelgren took some things from the cultists. Please confirm that you've marked down the coins. You also said you were taking the masks (which radiated a faint magical aura) and some razors: there are 6 of each, how many did you take?

    War Razor info:
    Light martial weapon, Dmg.1d4, Crit 19-20/*2, 1lb.

The masks are quite nasty; they are made of leather and don't smell very good.

-Everyone gains 227 XP for the bungled kidnapping of Skeener.

-Please post what the party plans next.

  2. The picture of Skeener is a little over the top, but it gives you a good idea of the mutilations he has suffered. Disregard the spikes in the back of his head and through his nose. He is missing one eye, but the remaining one is normal (not red).

  3. Balegren will be leaving the masks behind - even if they're awesome, being caught with one is an automatic death sentence.

He wrote down the coins and took a War Razor.

His great plan now is to get himself back to the right side of the river and recover. There will be much cursing and soul searching - as he couldn't stop Skeener, lacking the magical power to do so.

  5. That first night at the inn, Lugo is wracked by recurring nightmares from which he awakes screaming, in a cold sweat. The nightmares persist into the following day (days?), until Lucien's magic heals the worst of the rogue's injuries [not sure how many cure light wounds spells Lucien has per day, and I know that he used one to cure himself... so adjust this part accordingly].

When he does finally regain consciousness, Lugo runs his hands on his arms and neck, where the burns left by Aerodus's alchemical bombs have left permanent marks. At first, he is disoriented, wondering how he ended up where he is... then remembering the encounter with Skeener and his depraved followers... fighting for his life against the masked cultists, being stabbed once and then twice... and then everything fading to black as a bomb exploded nearby...

Even now that is on the mend and in relative safety, Lugo remains visibly shaken by the events of the previous night.

"So now what?" he asks. "Things are going from bad to worse... We are wanted for assaulting a pair of Hellknights, for murders we did not commit. We are now caught in some secret vendetta between rival and equally cultists of underworld gods, and witnessed Skeener sacrificing a victim... Now he has vanished, and who knows where we will find him... and whether we will now find ourselves his next targets... Baelgren, did you know that getting these materials for the Shadow Pact would be so... difficult?

"While I trust Laori less and less with every passing day, I think we have clearly made even more of an enemy of Skeener, and I think he is just as evil if not more so than she. If we could catch him" -- he shudders momentarily at the thought of even facing the horrific madman again -- "I would not hesitate to hand him to her. Let evil feed on itself. So long as Skeener is on the loose, he remains a deadly enemy. I am starting to doubt the wisdom of going any further with the Shadow Pact, though my night terrors worsen... now as much due to Skeener, as to..."Lugo refrains from naming Gaedren Lamm, though all know that is who is on his mind.

After a brief moment of silence, he murmurs, "Though it would seem logical to resume the hunt for Skeener, truth be told, I know not if I dare confront him again anymore than I dare confront... 'him'..." He looks at his companions, both fearful and shame-faced. "And even if we did, how would we do so? Would we return to his home, assuming that he would even go back there? Would we interrogate some of the labourers at the sawmill?"

    ReplyDelete
  6. Another thought occurs to Lugo. "Is it worth going back to the tunnels beneath Skeener's home? Now that we know what we're up against, perhaps we would find something down there that could help us get the upper hand on him... and to learn more about this Brotherhood of Seven that is referenced in the notes we found. At the very least, we know to bring fresh meat for the things that haunt the sewers... and we know that Lucien has a knack for distracting them... I wonder if there is any word on the street about Father Skinsaw and the Brotherhood of Seven?

"But while we're still on this side of the river, it's worth considering whether we might have failed to recover something from the Sawmill... some clue to a next victim, or hiding place, or associates, that Skeener would have left behind in his hurry to escape?"

Lugo can't help but shiver as he thinks on the growing list of fear-inducing names they seem to be getting embroiled with. "Or maybe we should just lay low for as long as we can and forget about all this talk of Shadow Pacts and revenge... It would probably be the smartest thing to do..."

    ReplyDelete
  7. Aerodus pipes up- "We could certainly feel out the streets to see if there is any word. I'm not sure a visit to the Sawmill is a good plan at the moment, but a return to Skeener's manor could certainly help. Maybe we take a day or two to recover our wounds, then return to his estate? Lucien, Baelgren and I can hit the streets for information while Lugo recovers..."

  8. Lugo looks around at the room as Aerodus shares his thoughts. "How long have I been here, anyway? And how long is this room paid for? I definitely wouldn't mind lingering a while longer while the rest of you put your ears to the street..."

Thinking back to the case at hand, he adds:

"I wonder how Skeener gets around, looking like he does. He escaped through a rooftop exit into the night, and travel by night with disguises and black magic would be easy enough to do. I might be able to keep an eye on the sawmill when I feel a little better, just to see if some odd characters make their way in there...Maybe we should make small talk with the folks on this side of the river, to see if they bring up anything concerning bodies or other unusual things having been found in the sawmill lately?"

Lugo leans back against his pillow, gently rubbing the wounds on his neck and shoulder. "I hate to say this, but maybe some of us need to return to Skeener's mansion as early as this evening... The longer we delay in picking up Skeener's trail, the greater the likelihood that we will lose him... and that he will be able to creep up on us undetected..."

    ReplyDelete
  9. As Lugo sits in bed waiting for his companions to agree on a course of action, the latter notice that he is becoming increasingly fidgety. He constantly readjusts his position, and his hands won't sit still. He picks at his wounds -- both the burns on neck and shoulder and the razor wounds on his torso--and wiggles his fingers when not picking or rubbing his scars. He was lucky that his thick leather absorbed the worst of the two slashes.

Lugo pulls his covers up to his chin, looking pale and shaky.

  10. If we do stay at the inn for another night, then Lucien will be able to heal Lugo. Lugo may add 8 hp to his total.

As for the current situation Lucien agrees that the group should head over to Skeeners mansion as soon as possible. " After the confrontation at the sawmill I doubt very much that Skeener or his minions will be seen there for a very long while. My guess is that they have another meeting place, our problem is finding this location. There may be something that we overlooked at his mansion that would lead us in the right direction."

    ReplyDelete
  11. So it sounds like one more day of recovery for Lugo, while the other three gather info... and then off to Skeener's mansion again (and, presumably, the otyugh-infested sewers... ready for more lovin' Lucien?).

Unless Baelgren had something else in mind?

    ReplyDelete
  12. That sounds right to me. A day of hitting the streets, a night of recovery and off we go.

  13. Money is the sinews of war. And I am feeling very 'unsinewy' right now.

Baelgren will be attempting to ply his trade at the usual bar. He is letting his hair grow out and has the start of a goatee.

He'll ask a little about Skeener before rejoining the others that night.

  17. Day 1 - complete bed rest at Leftover's Inn on the east shore (room prepaid by Baelgren?). Assuming Lucien hangs out with Lugo, that means Lugo will be fully healed come day 2 (as per Chris/Dag/Lucien's most recent post).

Day 2: Will meet up with the others at whatever predetermined meeting point they convene on (Aerodus's home, or the tavern that Baelgren frequents?). If the meeting point is within the city walls, then Lugo will do what he can to get in without being noticed by the guards. This may involve stealth 16 + 7 = 23 to sneak through the gates unnoticed (while the guards are busy interrogating other passersby), or bluffing if accosted (8 + 2 = 10).

It will be evident that Lugo's nerves are becoming increasingly frayed... Tormented by nightmares of childhood abuse (with a perpetrator he fears to confront still at large), girlfriend and pseudo-dragon companion in the hands of a crime lord, wanted by the authorities for a murder he did not commit, embroiled in an increasingly sinister plot to recover some artifacts for a far-from-trustworthy priestess of Zon-Kuthon in order for him to attempt some experimental Shadow Pact to rid him of his demons (and not entirely convinced by Baelgren's reassurances that the experiment would be safe) , and now probably on the hit list of some murderous madman who seems to have vanished in a puff of smoke... It was all becoming too much... What to do, what to do? Lugo will give Skeener's house and the tunnels beyond its cellars one more try, but that's it...

Hopefully, Baelgren will offer to pay for breakfast...

  18. TIMELINE

    Night 1 (immediately after Sawmill):

Whoever paid for the room at Leftover's needs to pay 5 sp/occupant (there are 2 beds) for the night. The room must be vacated before midday on the next day or an additional 5 sp/occupant is due. I assume Lugo and Lucien were the occupants on the first night, and that Baelgren and Aerodus retired to their own dwellings?

-Anyone who slept for 8 hrs. on this night regains 1hp/level.

    Day 1 (the day after):

From my understanding, Lugo wishes to spend Day 1 recovering at Leftover's. Is Lucien also recovering at the Inn? Whatever the case may be, someone must deduct 5 sp/occupant to cover the cost of the room. Meals are not included, and cost an extra 3sp/day for 1 person.

-Anyone spending the day and following night in bed (must not perform strenuous activities, which include many skills, combat, casting spells etc.) recover 2hp/level.

-Anyone who wants to perform skills such as Diplomacy: Gather Information may do so. It takes 1d4 hrs to gather information. Please be somewhat specific about the information you are seeking, as the DC will be adjusted accordingly. It is possible to make several Diplomacy checks in 1 day, depending on rolls. See p.94 of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook. Please post roll(s) and I will reveal info learned.

-If Baelgren wishes to make some coin, he must spend the day and make a Profession skill check to determine success. See p.103 in the Rulebook. Remember that this campaign uses the Pathfinder rules for skills; you may not use 'Trained Only' skills without training. If Baelgren did not pick a Profession skill upon character creation, we may need to talk.

    Day 2

...will be decided when activities from Day 1 are concluded...though I will assume, that for the present, the goal is to return to Skeener's Townhouse...

  19. Aerodus foots the bill for the first night for both occupants, before retiring to his apartment. He prepares and then casts Cure Light Wounds on himself, returning to full hit points. He preps his bombs for the day, as well as a Dex mutagen.

He hits the streets for info, rolling an 18+2=20 on untrained Diplomacy, taking 3 hours.

Depending on whether or not he gained any useful information determines where he goes and what he does next.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lucien will spend day 1 resting. He will also cure Lugo for 8 hp, as previously posted. If Baelgren or Aerodus wish to pay for another day, Lucien will gladly spend the extra day recovering for another encounter with the olyugh, or whatever it's called.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Is Aerodus seeking specific information, or just rumors at this point?

As I posted earlier, Lucien may not cast spells if he wants to gain hit points from rest. He would gain 1 hp/level for night 1, but if he wants 1hp/level for Day 1, he must have complete bedrest. He could gain another hp/level for resting on Night 2, though.

Guys, Aerodus has paid for 1 night of your stay at Leftover's. You are on the hook for the second day. If you can't afford it, you will be kicked out.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Aerodus is hoping for info on Skeener, but will take any generic Skinsaw/the sawmill burnt down/escaped murderer info he can get.

    ReplyDelete
  23. On the second day, Lugo will count his lucky stars that Aerodus was kind enough to cover his food and lodging for the first night. On the second day, he will gaze long and hard at his last two gold sails, before handing one of them over to the innkeeper to cover his food and lodging for the second day/night. If Lucien is completely penniless, the broken rogue will reluctantly offer to cover the bard's food and lodging as well...

[If Lucien is not well enough to regain spells and heal Lugo, then the latter will continue to look frail even on day three...]

    ReplyDelete
  24. Sorry, I meant that Aerodus paid for the 1st night, and you where on the hook for Day 1, not Day 2.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Feeling fine after drinking his magically-charged chemical-concoction (try saying that fast 3 times in a row), Aerodus hits the streets for some info.

(Remember that though there was talk of burning down the sawmill, I don't think you guys actually set fire to it. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

    RUMORS
-Something nasty happened at the Seven's Sawmill during the night. Sometime around mid-morning the Korvosan Guard cordoned off the area, no one has been allowed in. Apparently, several bloody bodies were removed shortly thereafter. Some say one of the victims was a guardsman, the rest were mill workers, all have been mulitated almost beyond regognition. THE SKINSAW MURDERERS HAVE STRUCK AGAIN.
-Wanted posters of 4 men have been spread across the city. One of the drawings bears a striking resemblance to Lucien, one obviously has elven blood, the 2 others aren't very accurate (in your opinion).
-Feelings of uneasiness among the general populace. People are suspicious, afraid, and angry. Many are calling for citizens to take matters into their own hands.
-Field Marshal Cressida Kroft has requested the aid of the Hellknights, the Sable Company and the Church of Abadar to solve the murders.
-A curfew has been set; no one allowed out after sunset or before sunup until the murders are solved.
-The guard has been conducting searches of residences and businesses for the suspected killers.

  26. Lugo remains blissfully oblivious to all these rumours for now, as he spends the day tucked away in one of the most comfortable beds he has ever slept in (even if it's nothing luxurious). Growing up among the Shingles, it was rare that he ever had access to luxuries like a decent mattress.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Aerodus will drop by Baelgren's place of employ and share what he has learned with the scroll-seller. From there we can work out whether or not one of us wants to run the risk of warning Lucien about the curfew and the poster (Aerodus prefers to let Baelgren do this, so that an elven blooded man isn't seen near the identified bard...).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Baelgren, on the other hand, prefers not to do this because at the moment he isn't particularly under suspicion. Although he may well be if he's seen hanging around with an Elven blooded man and the identified Bard.
